The Prayer

An excerpt from “6 Blocks Home

She didn’t quite know how to begin, but they’d all called it a conversation, so she started with, “Hello, God. How are you doing today?”

There was no answer. But Bear had said she needed to be quiet and still and listen very closely. Maybe she just hadn’t heard God’s answer, so she pretended that she had.

“That’s nice. I’m having a pretty good day so far. I guess. Actually, that’s not true. I mean, today’s not so bad, but just in general. These last couple months have really sucked. Sorry. I’m probably not supposed to say sucked. But you know what I mean, right?”

She waited, trying to be as quiet and still as possible.
